Further Information

A fine Rolls Royce aircraft Apprentice model of a jet engine RB211, polished and mounted to a wooden base. The jet turbine is made so it rotates.

In the 1950s–70’s, Rolls-Royce aero-engine apprentices commonly built “apprentice pieces” — beautifully made display models and cut-away sections of contemporary engines — as capstone training projects. They showed off precision turning, milling, sheet-metal, riveting and finishing skills, and were sometimes used for shop-floor instruction or presented as gifts (e.g., on retirements).
